2021 Honda Clarity and Hyundai Ioniq, Head-to-Head -- Which Plug-In Hybrid is Right for You?

Ours is a mid-size car in three generations, once a three-door, two-passenger liftback, once a five-door hatch, and now, back for the latest model year, a full-fledged plug-in hybrid sedan. Theirs is a relative newcomer to the segment, a 2016 debut. Each, however, is designed to go the extra mile, and not just with fuel. But at the end of the trip, only one pulls ahead where it matters: the 2021 Honda Clarity. Discover where and how here in Torrington at Sullivan Honda.

2021 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid vs. Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid

Performance

The 2021 Clarity plug-in hybrid features a 1.5-liter in-line four-cylinder gas engine paired with an electric motor and a 17-kWh lithium-ion battery, yielding a total system horsepower rating of 212. The new Ioniq plug-in hybrid, however, incorporates a 1.6-liter I4 gas engine mated to an electric motor and 8.9-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, which collectively put out only 139 horsepower. What's more, the 2021 Clarity battery can shell out up to 232 pound-feet of near-instant torque, whereas the Ioniq battery is only capable of 125 pound-feet. In sum, it's Honda that offers the more energetic and confident ride.

Safety

With Honda Sensing® driver-assist technology standard in both its base and Touring trims, 2021 Honda Clarity provides wraparound protection, and ultimately, peace of mind. It can provide warnings of imminent lane departures and front-end collisions, help prevent road departures and accidents, and assist you in staying in-lane and at a safe distance from traffic with adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, all standard, as are the piercing LED headlights, taillights and turn signals. Hyundai Ioniq offers similar features, but they're only available in its top-of-the-line trim, Limited.

Size

2021 Clarity is longer, taller, and wider, both overall and by wheelbase and track. Clarity's wheelbase measures a sprawling 108.3 inches, while the Ioniq comes up two inches shorter. Clarity's length at 192.7 inches, 58.2 inch height and 73.9 inch width offer more capacity and comfort than Ioniq's 176 inch length, 56.9 inch height and 71.7 inch width. Furthermore, Clarity offers a sizable cabin with up to 101.5 cubic feet for up to five passengers, not to mention a roomy 15.5-cubic-foot trunk. Ioniq, however, only offers 96.2 cubic feet for its passengers, and though it has a larger trunk, measuring 23.0 cubic feet, it acquires that cargo room at a major cost to the cabin. The takeaways: Clarity offers proportions more conducive to a stable, dependable ride as well as to comfort.

Technology

If you're looking for entertainment and settings control at your fingertips, look no further than 2021 Honda Clarity. It builds in an 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen and 180-watt, eight-speaker sound system, which comes complete with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for integrating your smartphone, SiriusXM and HD Radio, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, Bluetooth Streaming Audio, Radio Data System and convenient SMS Text Message Functionality.
